Post PHS Graduation education & employment

I was so not ready for college ( I had to study hard in high school because I was the oldest of 8 children and Mom worked so I had lots of responsibility and extra work thrust upon me)so I went to a tech college and became a "dental assistant." It was a good move because wherever I went I could easily find employment. My husband was in the military and we traveled thru the states being stationed in all kinds of areas. After 38 years of dentistry and being mature enough to think about what I wanted, I realized I so hated the dental field. I was good at it, but found it tough to be in an office all day and do the same routine over and over. So one day I quit! My true "love" was art! So I began to take courses at Pierce College and "low & Behold" became an art instructor, joined art leagues, met people with like interests and now I teach privately and sell my work at galleries. When I was through with my courses at Pierce I began teaching oil painting, then acrylic painting as added and the following year I started watercolor painting too. I taught at the Puyallup campus 6 years until we moved to Whidbey Island. I had art work at the Open art Studio and Art House Café in Tacoma until I moved up here. I still teach occasionally at the Open Art Studio in Tacoma. Now I display my work at the Garry Oak Gallery in Oak Harbor, WA. By the way, I love my life, nature & wildlife! I much prefer the natural beauty of nature to the city life.

Fondest memory of your years at PHS

I was always working so hard with my brothers & sisters, and worked after school and weekends that I had very little time to enjoy high school. I have fond small memories like when we were football champions 3 times the three years I was in high school. I was flattered by winning the design for the yearbook one time. I enjoyed the mornings before class. I remember the 1965(?) earthquake. One day in civics Dale Harrison came in late to Mrs. Case's class singing the "ding dong the witch is dead" song. That created a stir. I feel we had a great class with above average intelligence and mischeif.

Who was your favorite PHS teacher and why?

Mr. Meyer - He was a great history/social studies instructor because he taught in story form about the studies so it was interesting and he gabe essay tests so even if youknew just a little you could at least get points and if you knew a lot you scored high.

Where else have you lived since graduation?

Texas, Idaho, New Mexico, Calif, N. Carolina, Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Whidbey Island

Travels, special interests or hobbies

I was fortunate enough to travel to third-world countries that few ever go to - Christmas Island, Abemama, Tarawa, and other islands in the south pacific - doing dentistry on the natives. For those who remember me I always loved art, so wherever my husband was stationed I could make a little money painting or drawing a car or a nude or something for an airman or private individual. I dabbled in art with doodling and painting all my life until I really got serious in 1999 and made it a profession doing murals and decorative painting in homes and businesses, and eventually painting pictures and teaching. It is my hobby & my profession and my love.

What makes you happy?

Painting, out-of-doors/nature (anywhere) and God, animals - observing the wildlife and playing with pets.
